06/12/24 - This week in Year 5
Date: 6th Dec 2024 @ 8:30am
Year 5 have been up to a lot of exciting things this week at Greenhill. In preparation for this year’s Christmas Show, Year 5 have been working hard to learn their lines ahead of our performance in a few weeks’ time.
In English, we have been learning all about the story A Christmas Carol. Everyone has written some amazing persuasive letters to convince Ebenezer Scrooge to join in with the Christmas fun. There were some amazing examples of rhetorical questions, figurative language and fronted adverbials.
Well done Year 5 for all of your excellent efforts!
Date: 2nd Dec 2024 @ 11:15am
Firstly, congratulations to all Year 5's for their excellent efforts during assessment week. We are so proud of them for trying their hardest during each of the assessments.
Year 5 produced some amazing big writes by writing their own legends, inspired by 'The Sea Serpent's Daughter.' There were amazing examples of 'show not tell', fronted adverbials and superb description and we were blown away by some of the writing. Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about 'A Christmas Carol' and exploring the miserly ways of Ebeneezer Scrooge. BAH HUMBUG!!
We hope that you have a lovely weekend and come back on Monday, rested and ready for a brilliant week!
Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 4:15pm
This week in Year 5, we have been learning about the Brazilian legend of the sea serpent's daughter. Ask your child what they thought about the story and help them to come up with their own creative ideas for when they write their own legend next week.
We have been so creative this week and have designed our own signs for an ordinance survey map, created a keynote about being SMART on the internet and recreated the shadow from the sun at differnet points in the day.
Enjoy the snow this weekend and stay safe.
Date: 18th Nov 2024 @ 10:44am
It has been a fascinating week in Year 5 as we have continued our learning on 'The Rainbow Crow' as part of our Myths, Legends and Fables learning. The children have written some of their own amazing fables with some interesting characters, creative settings and thoughtful morals. Next week, we will be learning all about 'The Sea Serpent's Daughter' and Year 5 will begin to keep their creative minds flowing by writing their own legends.
Remember that Wednesday 20th November is school photo day and that on Mondays, children must come into school in their school uniforms with their PE kit in a bag.
Make sure that you are active on TTR so that your class can with the competition between Classes 11 and 12 and that you also check the Home Learning page on your class webpage.

It has been a great week in Year 5, we have finished our 2 week writing cycle on William Shakespeare and have produced some amazing biographies. We are really happy with the progress that Year 5 have been making and know that any reading you are doing with them at home is so important and influential in this. Thank you!
We have also been showing off our skills as debators by considering the English Reformation and judging which was the most significant reason why Henry VIII decided to split from the Catholic church, and to set up his own 'Church of England'. Hearing the children using great skills and some wonderfully crafted arguments was really pleasing.
Remember, this Thursday (24/10/24) is our Year 5 assembly where both classes will be performing in the large hall at 9:05. Please do make the effort to come and watch because all the children have been working and practicig hard and are excited to show off what they have done. Thank you!
Date: 14th Oct 2024 @ 9:19am
This week in Year 5, we have been learning all about William Shakespeare in preparation for writing a biography about his life. Your child should be able to tell you all about his life, from his childohod, through his career up to his death and legacy. We have continued our Tudor learning in History by considering the reasons for the English Reformation and Henry VIII's split from the Catholic church. Was it for wealth, power or religion? Why not ask your child to see which they belive to be the most significant reason.
It was Year 5's 'makers space' week and we enjoyed creating minature portraits in the style of Hans Holbein and Nicholas Hilliard. The children were amazing and making sure their portrait was small whilst still keeping it detailed. We are all very impressed by the creativity of everyone in Year 5.
A date for your diaries, Thursday 24th of October will be Year 5's assembly at 9:05 and we would love to see as many of you there as possible to watch the childen's hard work on show.
Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 4:06pm
We have been #expertlearners in Year 5 this week. Our setting descriptions of the heath where MacBeth met the witches have produced some fantastic figurative language, such as "the trees stand as sacred knots, binding earth to sky, their branches reaching towards the heavens while their roots delve deep into the darkness below." Well done to everyone for tackling this learning with enthusiasm and resilience.
We have also been becoming critical learners in History as we have decided in sources on Henry VIII were primary or secondary sources and questioned which sources are the most useful for studying history and why. Ask your child if they can remember the difference between a primary and secondary source.
Thank you to all of our Year 5s for their efforts this week. You are all working hard and the effort is showing in the improvements that you are making. Well done!
Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 4:15pm
Well done to all Year 5s for a wonderful week of learning. In Literacy we have been immersing ourselves in Shakespeare's MacBeth and will be writing setting descriptions about the heath where MacBeth meets the three weird sisters. It has been a challenging week and we have learnt to use figurative language and relative clauses to add description and detail to our writing. Year 5 have done amazingly well and we are so excited to see what they can conjure up next week.
Next week we are going to continue building on gymnastics and start to craft some routines incuding travelling and holding balances with control.
Make sure you that you check the class pages for the home learning and are being creative with the long term home learning on the Tudors.
Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 10:40am
This week in Year 5 we have done some exceptional learning. In English we have completed our big writes on 'The boy, the bear, the baron and the bard.' It was a wonderful first big write and we are really pleased with the efforts of everyone in our classes. Next week, we are moving onto MacBeth, which is one of William Shakespeare's finest plays. Have a watch of this fun take of the play to get an idea of what the play is all about- Shakespeare in Shorts: Macbeth | BBC Teach (youtube.com).
In Topic, we have been learning about Henry VIII and his wives. Test your child and see if they can remember the fate of each wife in the correct order. If you need a recap, have a watch of this- Henry VIII ("Money, Money, Money" by ABBA) (youtube.com)
A reminder that on PE days, all children must come into school with their PE kit in a bag unless they are told otherwise. Our PE days are Monday and Friday.
Well done everyone for a great week!

Class 12 are now in the full swing of Year 5 and it's lovely to see!
The children enjoyed reenacting the Battle of Bosworth as part of their topic WOW starter. They were all fantastic performers when using a range of their drama techniques and adapted to their drama roles very well. It has been a pleasure to see the children working extremely hard in their English lessons where they are working towards writing a narrative based on the book 'The Boy, The Bear, The Baron, The Bard'. Why not ask them about our text and who has been their favourite character? We are excited to read their finished pieces on Friday.

The children have immersed themselves and have done a great job at bringing the news to life through roleplaying as interviewers, eye-witnesses and firefighters. Please make sure to ask your children about their learning this week- can they recognise the difference between direct and reported speech? This links to our Geography topic where the children have been learning about the geogrpahical layout of France, we have learnt that France is divided into regions, what these regions are called and known for and about the mountain ranges and rivers which are significant features in the French landscape.
We hope that you enjoyed Class 11's assembly and that they are keeping you aware of the exciting learning we are doing into the story of King Lear.
