This half term the children in Class 5 have been learning all about SPACE. This week we brought all of our learning together to create our learning journey wall. We realised just how much learning we had done over just a few weeks. The children really enjoyed recalling facts about the Space Race with the different animals going into space, as well as the amount they could remember about the Moon Landing. The children have worked so hard on this topic in school but also at home when they made their fantastic space rockets and accessories.

This half term the children have been learning all about habitats and in particular microhabitats. Last week they made their own bug boxes for the minibeasts in our playground. They worked in groups to collect a mixture of natural materials and other resources they thought would attract bugs. Then they set up the homes in shoesboxes. They used leaves, sticks, grass, rocks, straws, plastic bottles and fruit. The habitats were completed by the children drawing their own minibeasts and adding them to the shoeboxes. Finally they placed the boxes in our playground and now have the job of monitoring them each playtime to see if any real minibeasts move in.

In Design Technology the children have made Space Buggies. They started by exploring and disassembling vehicles and labelling each part. Next they designed their own space buggy, wrote an equipment list and a method. Then they collected all their resources and began the construction process in pairs to bring their buggies to life. Finally they evaluated their work and thought about what had worked well and what they would improve next time.
We are so proud of ALL of the children and the fabulous work they have produced! Below are a few pictures of the process, our class display and our final products.

We have been learning about keeping safe when using the internet as part of our E-safety day. We looked at a story about Smartie the Penguin and his new tablet. We thought about the problems that Smartie had whilst playing online including pop up adverts, websites for older children and cyber bullying and what he should do in these situations.
The children made sock puppets of Smartie, film reels of the events in the story and information posters to help other children make the right choices when using the internet.
Below are some examples of the fantastic work they have done which will be added to our new E-Safety display in the computer room.
Date: 9th Nov 2020 @ 11:10pm
As part of our RE learning this half term we have been thinking about places that are special to us. The children thought about where it was that was special to them, why this place is so special and how they feel when they are there. The children really explored their feelings and discussed some very important reasons as to why their special place were important to them.
Below are a few examples of class 5's special places with their own thought and feelings to give a little more detail about their choices.

Black History Week - Nelson Mandela
Date: 21st Oct 2020 @ 12:07am
Year 2 have really enjoyed learning about Black History this week. We explored Nelson Mandela in more detail, as an inspirational figure that fought for change for black people. The children were eager to learn lots about him and expressed their thoughts and feelings about his time in prison and how he wanted equal rights for all in South Africa. We are so proud of how thoughtful and empathetic all the children were when thinking about how tough his life had been.
The work that they have produced is amazing and below are a few examples from a variety of children in class 5.
Date: 14th Oct 2020 @ 2:08pm
This week we have been reading the book Cinnamon in English. The children created some beautiful pyramid scenes and added in some fantasic descriptions. They included expanded noun phrases, similes, alliteration and onomatopoeia. We are so proud of their learning!!
