Phonics:

Phase 2

 Type ‘jolly phonics’ into YouTube.

 Remember to learn the sound according to how the You Tube video pronounces it. Sssss like a snake. Not ESS.

Task: Learn a new sound daily then practice writing a line of that new sound daily.

Book of the week: The Enormous Turnip

After your second reading of the book, ask your child questions about what happened in the story.

1. Who were the characters?
2. Where was the story set? (Setting)
3. How would you get the turnip out?
4. What would you do with the turnip?

Complete the Activity – Draw of picture of your favourite scene.

Remember to think of the different characters…was the grandad as small as the little girl?  

Do not forget to concentrate on the environment and setting of the story.

Book of the week: Way Home

Day 1

• Look closely at the Front Cover of Way Home.
• Make brief notes about five things that you notice and what you think might happen in the book.
• Read First Page Text. Is this how you expected it would be from the front cover. What do you think about Shane? What do you think might happen?
• Listen to the Reading of the first part of the book, stop the video at 6.14, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjzP18bsSdQ.

Day 2

• Listen to the Reading of the second part of Way Home, start the video at 6.14, where you ended it yesterday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjzP18bsSdQ.
• Did the story end as you predicted? What could happen in a sequel to the story?

Day 3

• Read Cat Speaks 1 and 2.
• Complete Cat Speaks questions.

Day 4

• Look at the Last Page of the book.
• Read Picture Prompts and think about your answers.
• Choose five of your answers to write as sentences.
• Complete Objects. Imagine how Shane got each of these objects and why it might be important to him.

Day 5

• Watch the trailer for A Street Cat named Bob.

• How does this true story seem similar to Way Home? How does it feel different? Try to think of three different ways.
• Read the Extract and answer the Questions.

Writing:

Day 1

• Use Development/Resolution to note down with words and pictures what you think will happen in the rest of the book. 
• Write about your predictions. What will happen to Shane? What will happen to the cat? How might the story end?

Day 2

• Read Through the Windows. This is what Shane says to the cat as they look through the three sets of windows in the book.  
• Look at Windows. Pick one window and imagine what Shane would say to the cat about it. Write 2 or 3 sentences of speech, making sure that you keep to Shane’s informal style.
• Challenge yourself to write about the other windows or to imagine and write about other windows.

Day 3

• Write Way Home as though it is told by the cat.
• Use your Emotions Graph and some of the ideas that you saw in Cat Speaks 1 and 2.

Day 4

• Think of 5-10 questions that you would like to ask Shane.
• Write these down and then imagine his answers to each of them. Write his answers, trying to make them sound like the way he talks in the book.

Day 5

Write a poem about the place you feel most at home.

Book of the week: Jabu and the Lion and Tyger by William Blake

Day 1

• Read Jabu and the Lion Part 1.
• What do we learn about the character of Jabu? Write three sentences to describe him.

Day 2

• Read Jabu and the Lion Part 2. What was the biggest surprise about the story? What did you like about the story? Was there anything you didn’t like? What did it remind you of?
• Write 2 or 3 sentences about each of the characters in the story on Character Summary. How can you best describe them?

Day 3

• Read Androcles and the Lion.
• Underline any vocabulary that you’re not sure about and look it up in a dictionary or on https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/
• What would you say are the three main scenes in this story? Write a single sentence summary of each of them.

Day 4

• Read The Tyger by William Blake.  It’s an old poem, but you probably can work out some of what it means.

• Which is your favourite line in the poem? What patterns can you spot in the poem?

Day 5

• Read The Tyger by William Blake. Practise reading it until you can read it fluently out loud. 
• What do you notice new about the poem from reading it again? Can you find three new things?
• Read The Tyger - Questions. Think about your answers.
• Write your answers in clear sentences.

Day 1

• Think about how this story could develop and end. Why is the lion roaring? What will Jabu do? What will happen?
• Use notes and drawings to show your ideas on Story Development/Ending.
• Write your version of your predicted development and ending. Try to include some of the new vocabulary in your writing.

Day 2

• Watch this version of the story. How is it different to the written version?

• Make a story-map. Use words and pictures to make yourself a reminder of the main events of the story.
• Use your story-map to either practise telling the story out-loud yourself OR to help you make a Comic-strip version of the story

Day 3

• Think about the theme of both of these stories: Keeping Promises.
• Think of your own story on the same theme. Who could make a promise? What will they promise? To who? Will they keep it or break it? What will happen? Plan your story on the Story-Planner.
• Write your own story.

Day 4

• Look carefully at Tiger Images 1-3. Make notes about what you notice.
• Watch this Deadly 60 Video Clip about tigers. Make more notes about what you notice.

• Turn some of your notes into Descriptive Phrases. Try to use precise vocabulary, alliteration, metaphors and similes.
• Try organising some of your phrases into a poem about tigers.

Day 5

• Look at William Blake’s presentation of the poem. William Blake was a poet and artist who wrote this poem in 1794. What do you like about his presentation? Is there anything that you dislike?
• Choose at least one verse from the poem. Use your best handwriting and add illustrations to present the poem beautifully.
