Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 20/1/2025

Welcome to another exciting week in Year 1! We’ve had a fantastic week full of activities across all subjects. Here’s a little sneak peek into what we’ve been learning and exploring:

English: Paddington at the Palace Character Description

This week in English, we’ve been reading Paddington at the Palace. The children loved following Paddington on his adventures! After reading the story, we focused on describing the main character, Paddington Bear. The children practiced using adjectives to describe his appearance, personality, and actions. We used the conjunctions 'and' and 'because' to join our ideas and created a Wanted Poster.

Maths: Subtraction Fun!

In Maths, we’ve been diving into subtraction. The children practiced solving missing number problems like:

  • 10 - __ = 6
  • __ - 4 = 3

They also worked on representing subtraction facts using objects, pictures, and number lines.

Example: If we start with 10 apples and we take away 4, how many apples do we have left?
10 - 4 = 6
The children were able to solve these using a number line and pictures of apples.

Topic: The UK’s Four Countries and Their Capitals

This week in Topic, we learned about the four countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We discussed where they are on the map and their capitals – London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast. The children enjoyed using maps to locate each country and were excited to learn a little bit about each place. They also labelled  maps to show the countries and their capitals. Next week, we’ll  be learning about British weather.

Science: Exploring Mammals

In Science, we focused on mammals! The children loved learning about these special animals that are warm-blooded, have fur or hair, and give birth to live babies. We learned about animals like lions, dogs, whales, and humans. The children worked in groups to sort animals into categories—mammals and non-mammals.

RE: Islamic Place of Worship

In RE, we explored the Islamic place of worship, the mosque. We learned about its importance to Muslims and what happens inside. The children were fascinated by the beautiful designs, the prayer mats, and the call to prayer. We also talked about the different ways people show respect in a mosque, such as removing shoes and being quiet. The children shared what they already knew andasked thoughtful questions about Islamic traditions.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we’ll be continuing our adventures in reading with Paddington and looking at time in maths. We’ll also be expanding our knowledge of different animals in Science

Have a great weekend, Year 1! See you next week for another week of fun and learning
