Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 6/1/2025

Date: 9th Jan 2025 @ 2:04pm

What a fun and busy week it has been in Year 1! We’ve been learning lots of exciting things in English, Maths, and Topic, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been up to:

English: The Queen's Hat

In English this week, we’ve been reading the fantastic story The Queen’s Hat by Steve Antony. It’s a funny story about the Queen chasing her hat around London after the wind blows it away! The children loved the adventures the Queen had as she tried to catch her hat, and the beautiful illustrations really brought the story to life.

After reading the story, we worked on retelling it in our own words. The children did a wonderful job remembering the key events and details. They used their imagination to retell the story, and we were so impressed with their creativity and enthusiasm!

Here is a video link to the story if you would like to enjoy it with your child at home.

Maths: Place Value

In Maths, we’ve been learning all about place value. This week, the children practiced ordering numbers from smallest to largest. We also explored different ways to represent numbers using objects, number lines, and pictures.

The children have been using symbols like > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equals) to compare numbers. We’ve had some fun challenges where the children had to decide which number was bigger or smaller, and they’ve done a brilliant job!

Topic: Sculpture and Henry Moore

In Topic, we’ve started our Art lessons by learning about sculptures. The children have been exploring what sculptures are and how they are created. We’ve also looked at the work of famous sculptor Henry Moore, whose large, abstract sculptures are known all around the world.

The children were fascinated by the shapes and designs of Henry Moore’s sculptures. They loved discussing what they saw in his artwork and were inspired to create their own sculptures using different materials. It’s been a creative and exciting start to our art learning!

We can’t wait to continue exploring sculpture and see what wonderful artwork the children create in the coming weeks.

That’s all for this week! It’s been a fantastic time in Year 1, and we’re looking forward to more learning adventures next week. Thanks for reading, and we’ll be back with more updates soon!
